KEOKUK — The Friday Night Lights had a certain gleam to them at Calvert Stadium. It was Homecoming, a special time of the football season for the team, the school and the community. Pep rallies, parades, dances and many other festivities are a large part of a special occasion. The blue and yellow socks players were wearing Friday may have seemed part of that.

Keokuk High School’s Homecoming was even more special for the head football coach this year. That’s why the fans saw the different colored socks.

At a pep rally, Josh Roberts got a surprise that turned out to be very emotional for him when the team presented him a gift.

“It was great to see Coach Roberts and his reaction when the kids announced what they were doing and handed over a gift basket to him at our Pep Rally,” Keokuk Athletic Director Zach Summers said.

“My dad is battling bladder cancer,” Roberts said. “We have really good kids and really good coaches on my staff and they surprised me a bit made it an emotional night for me.”

Assistant Coach Dalton McCarty and the football team organized everything for Friday night. They went to AD Summers a few weeks previous and asked if they could do something for Coach Roberts and his dad.

“We went through the approval process and the kids and coaches took it from there,” Summers said.

“Coach Roberts pours his heart and soul into his football program and will do anything for his players,” Summers said. He has done this from the first day he was hired at Keokuk.”

Roberts’ head football coach at Clark County, Mo., Matt Smith, was a huge part in Roberts’ life growing up and that impact has translated into Coach Roberts doing the same for his players.

“It was awesome for the football players to be able to give back to him and his family in their time of need,” Summers said.

All the money that they collected Friday night will go towards Coach Roberts’ father’s medical expenses.

The players and coaches took it upon themselves to get yellow and blue socks and put decals on the back of their helmets They solicited donations to help Roberts’ dad.

“That was all a surprise to me,” Roberts said.

It is the kind of thing that can stir up emotion in any one.

It certainly did affect Roberts. How could it not “with that kind of stuff going on.

“I’m always going to be proud of the kids. We got a great group of coaches and players.”
